Boris Johnson, speaking to journalists after returning from Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, said the streets were alive and Ukrainians were “confident.” Ukraine should ordinarily host the show after winning it in May, but organizers stated on Friday that it would be too dangerous.

He was speaking after returning from Kyiv, where he visited President Volodymyr Zelensky on an unexpected visit.
Mr. Johnson said that the city felt alive and confident and that people were out on the streets in a way that he hadn’t seen in a few weeks.
Following a “complete assessment and feasibility analysis,” the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes Eurovision, announced on Friday that it would not be possible to stage the 2023 contest in Ukraine.
“As a result of this decision, the EBU will now commence discussions with the BBC, as this year’s runner-up, to potentially host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in the United Kingdom, in accordance with the rules and to maintain the continuity of the event,” the EBU statement stated.

Ukraine has already expressed its dissatisfaction with the decision, claiming that despite the ongoing Russian invasion, it believes it will be able to ensure the competition’s security.
“We will urge that the judgment be changed,” Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said.
“Hosting Eurovision 2023 in Ukraine sends a strong message to the rest of the world, which is currently backing Ukraine,” he stated.
