Anita Alvarez, an artistic swimmer from the United States, nearly drowned during the world championships in Budapest after losing consciousness in the water. Her instructor Andrea Fuentes saved her life.
After seeing Alvarez go to the bottom at the conclusion of her solo free final routine, Spanish synchronised swimmer Fuentes, a four-time Olympic winner, dove into the water.
Before being taken away on a stretcher, she received medical assistance next to the pool.
It was the second time Fuentes had to save Alvarez; the first time was when the American’s swimming companion, Lindi Schroeder, and Fuentes dove into the pool during an Olympic qualification event the previous year.
“Anita is already performing at her best; she is considerably better.
To be honest, it was a pleasant scare,” Fuentes told the Spanish newspaper Marca.
“I jumped into the pool again when I noticed that neither a lifeguard nor anybody else was doing so.
She wasn’t breathing, which made me a little concerned, but she is now well.
She needs to relax.
Fuentes said in a statement posted to the US Artistic Swimming Instagram page that the 25-year-old Alvarez will get a medical evaluation on Thursday before a decision was made regarding her participation in the team competition on Friday.
